We bought it for the holiday as our old sony miniDV camcorder is too old. It’s very slim, compact; indoor quality is good too. We all like it very much!!!

I got Sony HDR-CX500v Camcorder from Amazon 4 days back. Last night I tried to use Remote Control/Commander supplied in the box but it didn’t work. I changed the battery but that didn’t work.
I called Amazon customer support and she gave me 3 options-
1. Return and get refund
2. Return and get another one
3. Take 15% discount on whole amount and buy a remote from local store
I am confused what to do. How come new set will have dead RC or does it happen sometime?
For now I have taken 15% discount and ordered for another remote on ebay. Will update once I get the new RC.
But my doubt is in future will there be any issue in camcorder too if the whole unit was bad. As of now camcorder looks good.
The camcorder overall is good and I can’t imagine a better than this at price I got it. But dead remote of a new camcorder stops me rating it 5/5.
Update: I got a new remote last night and it worked perfectly. I am happy now. The camcorder is really amazing and deserves 5 out of 5. Since my remote was not working I had rated this 3/5 otherwise it’s 5/5.

This small camcorder produces nice HD video with a minimum of fuss. I like the touch screen and flash memory. The LCD can be difficult to see in bright sunlight and an optical viewfinder would be helpful. Because of the small size there is no room for a viewfinder. The 12 MP still images are a great bunus and are just as good as those from my SLR. There is no way to adjust lens opening or shutter speed.

Here are the results of a few quick tests that determined this product is a keeper:
As promised this camcorder is amazing in low light settings. I tested it indoors with curtains drawn and a 40W incandescent night-table lamp. I saw no digital noise, or speckling in even the darkest mahogany furniture. If I switch to low light mode I actually see details in dark furniture and the wood finish sheen. I purchased the 3W Sony video light anyway because I film holiday gatherings / indoor family events and it brightens people’s faces — setting them apart from the background.
The auto-focus zoom is very good and fast. The updated optical/electronic stabilization is also very good. I haven’t played with some of the other features, like geo-tagging, and I couldn’t really evaluate the face-tracking focus in a small room, but they seem useful in certain situations. Geo-tracking must be great when you’re traveling on vacation. That’s when I’ll use it.
My test videos with people’s faces have beautiful color and detail. I think the images are not razor-sharp. Sony might have slightly softened the pixel edges, but it is unquestionably HD even without the optional camcorder-to-HDMI cable. I don’t know if it would appear sharper with an optional HDMI cable, or if I shot outdoors in broad sunlight, but it isn’t an issue for me.
I plan to burn DVDs on my iMac with FinalCut Express 4.0.1 and iDVD. I’ll also try to burn AVCHD-DVDs with Sony’s PMB software on my PC to watch on the BluRay player.
